We have contracted with online marketing expert Charles George to help us build our online presence through Facebook advertising. According to Google Analytics, we had 61,267 users on our website in 2018, an increase of 165.8% over the previous year.
Our mailing list has grown from 1,550 at this time last year to more than 2,700 currently. Much of that is due to Facebook advertising that produces an average of 3-4 new subscribers per day. Every Tuesday I send out a short email that includes a link to the next Sunday’s sermon and some thoughts on how to use it effectively.

Plus, he taught us how to plan the content of each newsletter, make offers, and use the newsletter to engage our audience and drive revenue. Moreover, he taught us how to track our success to ensure the email list is growing and our email efforts are profitable.
Today, the weekly newsletters have an average open rate of 22.5%, up from 12% when we only sent one email newsletter every two months. The donate now button in the newsletter is the most clicked link, followed by parents requesting support. We expect donations and revenue to continue to grow based on the digital foundation Charles helped us establish. Supporting parents throughout their NICU journey is why Hand to Hold exists.
Plus, the weekly email newsletter is now one of the core communication channels with our audience. Email engagement is high with subscribers emailing me each week based on the content in the newsletter.
All in all, since we first started working with Charles, our online audience has increased and is more engaged.

Charles’ Facebook ads are like crack. Once he starts them, you can’t stop. You see people join the list at rates you’ve not experienced before and you’re addicted.
I was sending a weekly RSS feed newsletter which wasn’t getting big engagement or click-through. He recommended that I send a more personal email weekly and now I’m averaging over 20% open rates compared to 13% and a ton more engagement.
I use the list to get attendance for webinars, workshops, do surveys and I used it to ask for interviews for my next book and I’ve had good results for all of these things.
So recently, I asked my tribe to contribute to a fund so that people who didn’t have the means to buy my book could get it free. Moms, Dads, sisters, and brothers who had lost a loved one to suicide or drug overdose, who on my list, responded with over $1,200, and to date, I’ve sent out over 60 books to people who are struggling from a loss from suicide or drug related death.
I am a digital marketing expert although I don’t have anywhere close to the experience Charles has with Facebook advertising. But I know the value of a good email list and someone who knows how to use the data from Facebook to build a list with higher engagement. Once you have a good list, you can make money, get donations, build attendance to events, get answers to surveys. Book publishers and agents are more interested in authors with a good list. There is a lot of power there and email still has the highest engagement, click through rate, and sales potential of any advertising out there.
